January 2021: Farm Shop open as usual

8th January 2021 by Becky - Essington Farm

Following the PM’s latest announcent, we wanted to let our customers know that our farm shop, butchery, and deli counter are still open as usual – 7 days a week, 9am-5pm. We have plenty of fresh produce available. Our restaurant is still closed for the time being.

It is now more important than ever to keep everyone safe and comfortable, so we are asking that all customers follow the guidelines below when shopping at the farm:

• Hand sanitiser will be available at the entrance for customers to use. We are also sanitising hand baskets and trolleys.

• Please wear a face mask in the farm shop (unless medically exempt).

• We are asking all of our customers to keep to the recommended 2 metres apart whilst shopping.

• We are operating a one-way system so please follow the direction arrows around the shop.

• Please stand behind the marked lines at the deli and butchery counters, and at the till points. This marks a safe, 2 metre distance.

• There will be limited capacity inside the shop due to social distancing, so there may be a queue if we’re busy. If possible, we would also request that only 1 family member comes to the shop or till point at a time.

If you, a member of your household or someone you have come into contact with has experienced symptoms of COVID-19 in the last 14 days we ask that you do not visit the farm shop.

If you are unable to visit the shop, we are offering a contactless click and collect service. This enables customers to order produce from the comfort of their home, pay over the phone and then collect from our car park. To place an order, please visit our website essingtonfarm.devstaging.site

10 Top Tips for Growing Pumpkins

18th May 2020 by Becky - Essington Farm

Taking part in our Grow Your Own Pumpkin campaign? Make sure you take a look at our 10 top tips for growing pumpkins!

  1. Be aware that  pumpkins will not stand any frost. Do not plant outside until the end of May or early June. It is a good idea to plant it in a pot of about 1 litre capacity first to grow it on. You can bring this in at night or in cold weather for a week or two until it is safe to plant outside.
  2. Plant about 600mm apart to allow them to grow. Some varieties grow long runners!
  3. Pumpkins prefer fairly free drained soil but will tolerate most soils if not waterlogged. They can be grown in tubs but you will need a fairly big one – 600mm in diameter.
  4. There are lots of different varieties. Some will grow bigger than others. Generally, the big ones will only produce one or two per plant. The smaller ones may produce several.
  5. Plant deep enough to cover all the root ball and water in immediately. Keep moist during the first few days until it has made new roots.
  6. Look out for slugs and snails! They can eat the plant off level with the ground over night! You can use slug pellets, beer traps, egg shells to stop them – whatever works for you. It is not a bad idea to try to control your slugs a few days before you plant.
  7. Keep the weeds down and water your pumpkin during dry weather.
  8. As the pumpkin fruits form and grow you can make a better shape and even ripening it if you turn the fruit occasionally or place it on a tile or some matting to keep it clean. Be careful not to break the stem!
  9. As Autumn approaches look out for early frosts. Cover the pumpkins with matting or newspaper if a frost is forecast.
  10. When the pumpkin is ready to harvest cut the stem well above the pumpkin so have a decent sized “handle”. It will keep much better with the stem still intact.

Growing pumpkins at home? Share the progress of your pumpkin each week using the hashtag #EssingtonPumpkins on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
